    Maintenance Before/During Sharpening

STONE LOST ITS ABRASIVENESS, IT NEEDS METATE

Metate (目立て) is the process of reviving the abrasive power of a Diamond stone. When a diamond stone is used, the stone particles become even finer between the blade and the stone, and these particles can get into the gaps between the stone and reduce its grinding power. Removing those particles using some tools on each grit; Metate can restore the abrasiveness of the stone, it is especially important to refresh a stone with Metate on rough stones.

HOW TO METATE - BEFORE STARTING SHARPENING

FOR UNDER 1500 GRIT DIAMOND STONE

WHAT YOU NEED

 - Diamond Stone under 1500 grit, NSK Kogyo

 - Large Dressing Stone

 - Small Dressing Stone (for #200 diamond stone)

 - Glass Plate

 - Clean Water

HOW TO DO

1, Set a diamond stone on the sharpening stand and rub a large dressing stone with water to make mud.
2, Set the glass plate and add water to it.
3, Put a diamond stone down onto the wet glass plate with mud which made process 1.
4, Rub a diamond stone on the glass plate to flatten the NSK surface clock wise few times and another way, and change the direction again until a diamond stone surface is flat.
3, Once the diamond stone surface is flat don't wash off the stone surface yet, round the diamond stone edges and corners with a large dressing stone.
4, Wash all the stone and glass plate you used, and now ready to sharpen.

* Please be aware that doing the Metate on stones over 800 grit will run the stones very fast.

HOW TO METATE - DURING SHARPENING

ONLY FOR 200 GRIT DIAMOND STONE

WHAT YOU NEED

 - Diamond Stone under 200 grit, NSK Kogyo

 - Large Dressing Stone

 - Small Dressing Stone (for #200 diamond stone)

 - Clean Water

WHEN TO METATE

Recommend to Metate when the surface goes off of a flat.
It depends on your sharpening work and technic, however Lightly and maintained surfacing and flattening should be done every 15-30 min, heavy reshaping sharpening will need more resurfacing than that. The single bevel shouldn't be needed more often than double bevel.

HOW TO DO

1, Rub entire of the diamond stone evenly with small rough stone, also round the diamond stone edges and corners
2, Wash all the stone with the water, and read to back sharpening

* Please be aware that doing the Metate on stones over 200 grit will run the stones very fast.
